Structure and Pacing: A Blended Approach for Busy Educators

The course spans over five weeks and utilizes a blended learning approach that recognizes the realities of a new teacher’s schedule. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Online Modules (Self-Paced): These modules provide the foundation for each week’s topic. You’ll encounter video lectures from classroom management experts, real-world case studies, key readings, and interactive activities – all designed to be completed at your own pace and convenience.
  • Weekly In-Person Sessions (Interactive): These sessions are designed to solidify your learning through discussions, presentations, role-playing scenarios, and Q&A with me, the course facilitator. Collaboration and peer feedback are central here, fostering a supportive learning community where you can connect with your fellow educators.

Setting the Stage for Building a Thriving Classroom: Introduction Module

The course kicks off with a straightforwardly named “Start Here” module. This introductory section acts as a springboard, providing an overview of the course content, platform navigation, and expectations. It’s designed to familiarize participants with the learning journey ahead and ensure they have the technical skills to engage fully with the online materials. I also included a welcome message designed to convey a sense of enthusiasm and excitement for the new teachers that are joining the program in addition to highlighting the importance of effective classroom management.

Active Learning Through a Variety of Methods

Throughout the course modules, I used a variety of instructional design methods to cater to diverse learning styles and promote active engagement. Here are some key elements participants will encounter:

  • Video Lectures: Gain insights from experts in the field of classroom management through engaging videos.
  • Real-World Case Studies: Analyze real classroom scenarios to understand the impact of different management strategies in action.
  • Interactive Activities: Apply learning through practical exercises that simulate real-world classroom situations.
  • Collaborative Discussions and Forums: Share experiences, insights, and questions with peers to foster a collaborative learning environment where everyone can benefit from shared perspectives.
  • Self-Assessments: Regularly reflect on understanding of key concepts and track progress throughout the course.

Goals, Outcomes, and Alignment: A Roadmap to Success

The course has a clear and singular goal: to equip teacher with the knowledge and skills to create a thriving classroom environment where their students can flourish. This overarching goal is broken down into specific learning outcomes for each week, ensuring a focused and targeted approach. The activities, assessments, and discussions within each module are meticulously aligned to these outcomes, ensuring a cohesive learning experience that will help teachers achieve mastery.

Learner-Centered Learning with Guidance

“Thriving in the Classroom” prioritizes a learner-centered approach. Teachers will be actively involved in the learning journey through discussions, presentations, and application of concepts through activities and lesson plan development. My role as the facilitator is to act as a guide, and I’ll also provide expert insights, answer questions, and offer personalized feedback to support course participants.

Building a Supportive Learning Community

The course recognizes the importance of building a supportive learning community. The online discussion forums and in-person sessions provide opportunities to connect with other teachers, share experiences, and learn from each other’s perspectives. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of community and equips participants with a network of fellow educators as they embark on their new teaching journey.

Addressing Participant Needs: Infrastructure and Support

I understand that technical difficulties and unforeseen circumstances can arise even though the course platform (Canvas) is user-friendly. So, I included a Canvas Tutorial and Troubleshooting section with videos and resources are readily available to address any technical issues course participants might encounter. Additionally, I offered to be available throughout the course to answer questions and provide support to ensure a smooth learning experience.
